Join us to explore the world of plankton with Christian Sardet, a CNRS emeritus research director at the Observatoire Oc\u00e9anologique of Villefranche-sur-Mer and his son Noe the co-founder of Parafilms. Including photos of plankton taken in Shimoda, Japan in 2016, together they will take you into the complex and beautful world of drifting plankton. These organisms represent 98 % of the biomass of the oceans, while swimming fish and mammals represent less than 2%. Plankton is the most ancient and the largest ecosystem on the planet. This event will bring new understanding to our oceans and our place on the plantet. <\/p>\n

Context:
\nFrom large jellyfish and siphonophores – the largest animals in the world – to fish larvae and tiny algae and bacteria, plankton is a complex ecosystem composed of strange and beautiful creatures which drift with the currents.<\/p>\n

Drifting planktonic organisms represents 98 % of the biomass of the oceans, while swimming fish and mammals represent less than 2%. Plankton is the most ancient and the largest ecosystem on the planet. All organisms of the tree of life – except for land plants – have representatives in the plankton, some like fish, shelfish and crabs spending their entire youth among plankton.<\/p>\n

Man and plankton are intimately linked. Plankton produces half of the oxygen we breathe and sequesters a third of the CO2 we produce. It is also the origin of oil and gas buried deep beneath the oceans. The entire ocean food chain rests on plankton which capture light from the sun. Without plankton, there would be no fish..<\/p>\n

Today with the best imaging instruments – novel cameras and microscopes \u2013 you can record and analyse the social world of plankton, catch their cellular and molecular make up, their motions and interactions. <\/p>\n

Christian Sardet<\/p>\n

Emeritus Research Director at the Observatoire Oc\u00e9anologique of Villefranche-sur-Mer (CNRS Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique and Paris University) Christian Sardet uses macro and micro-photography to capture images of plankton that show the beauty and multifaceted nature of these enigmatic creatures. As one of the co-founders and coordinator of the Tara Oceans expedition, Sardet himself is an energetic mariner who sails the seas of the world to photograph his subject. He is the creator, with the Macronauts \u2013 Noe Sardet and Sharif Mirshak \u2013 from Parafilms, Montreal of the \u201cPlankton Chronicles\u201d project.
\nTheir documentaries, animated films and DVDs have won many prizes. Christian Sardet was awarded the \u201cEuropean Award for Communication in Life Sciences\u201d from the European Molecular Biology Organization (EMBO, 2007). Kawade Shobo has published the Japanese edition of his book \u201cPlankton \u2013 Wonders of the Drifting World\u201d.
\nAt KYOTOGRAPHIE, Sardet will exhibit photos and films of plankton, including new images recently taken in Shimoda, Japan, as well as photos of microplastic waste in the ocean.
