Portfolio Review 2015 – Reviewer’s Profile

A specialist of images, his research focuses on the contexts of their production, distribution and reception. He has studied for many years the mechanisms involved in the circulation of images, concentrating on the ties linking photography, art and cinema.

He organized a number of international exhibitions as an independent curator and published several books, notably Le Cliché-Verre de Corot à Man Ray, the retrospectives of Dorothea Lange and Tina Modotti, Chaplin et les images, Fellini, La Grande parade, or recently, Derrière le rideau – L’Esthétique Photomaton. Stourdzé received a fellowship from the Villa Medicis – French Academy in Rome. He was the director the Musée de l’Elysée and editor in chief of the Magazine ELSE from 2010 to 2014.

An Art Critic and a Curator, Pascal Beausse is currently the Head of Photographic Collections at the Centre National des Arts Plastiques (CNAP) in Paris. He is also Guest Professor at the Geneva University of Arts and Design (HEAD).
He is a member of the editorial committee of the art journal Critique d’art, and contributed to magazines such as Art Press, Blocnotes and Flash Art. He has published essays, articles, interviews and catalogues on the work of Maria Thereza Alves, Jimmie Durham, Teresa Margolles, Allan Sekula, Bruno Serralongue, Cécile Hartmann and Wang Du, among others.
Recent exhibitions curated by Pascal Beausse include La Cabane (Palais de Tokyo, Paris, 2006); Welcome to Heterotopia!! (Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennial, Tokamachi, 2006); Void Has No Exit (Creative Union, Hiroshima, 2008); Numero Tres (La Virreina – centre de la imatge, Barcelona, 2012), Documents pour une information alternative (Rencontres d’Arles, 2012), Knowledge is Power (PhotoEspaña, Madrid, 2013), The Secret Sea (Onomichi City Museum of Art, Onomichi, 2013), among others.

She is a teacher at The International Center of Photography and freelance portrait photographer for major magazines and corporate clients in Europe and the US.

Stephanie’s work has been shown at the Palais de Tokyo (Paris), Bibliothèque Nationale de France (Paris), Le Bon Marché (Paris), Galerie Duboys (Paris), Galerie Photo (Paris) and Soho Photo Gallery (New York) and awarded by Flash Forward 2009 (Canada) and La bourse du Talent 2009 (France).

Her work has also been featured in The New York Times Newspaper, The Guardian, Le Monde Magazine, Images Magazine, ELLE, Le Journal de La Photographie, View Magazine, Io Donna, Zoom magazine, Esquire, Radio Canada, fubiz.net, photographie.com and numerous blogs all over the world.

Between 2000 and 2006, as well as working as an editorial portrait photographer in Paris, France, Stephanie created two major photography projects for underprivileged children: LABO PHOTO & REGARDS, both of these projects received much attention and continue to have an impact today.

Christine Barthe is Curator, Head of the photographic collection at the musee du quai Branly.
She leads an important acquisition policy of old and contemporary worldwide photography.
She curated a great number of exhibitions as for exemple, in the musee du quai Branly : Nocturnes de Colombie, images contemporaines (2013-2014), Patagonie, Images du bout du monde (2012), Camera Obscura (2007), « Le Yucatán est ailleurs », Expéditions photographiques (1857-1886) de Désiré Charnay (2007).
She is member of the programmation committee of the biennal Photoquai since 2007 and was associated curator for latinamerica for Photoquai 2007, 2009, 2011.
She is member of the selection committee for the grant program Les Residences de Photoquai, dedicated to contemporary photography.
She lectures and makes research stays on contemporary non western photography in Asia, Latin America and Africa. She published different essays on exploration photography in the 19th century, historical uses of photography for anthropology.

Véronique Terrier Hermann is a contemporary art historian, focused on Images and Visual Culture. Doctor in Art History, curator, researcher and professor at the School of Fine Arts in Nantes, France as well as a member of the photographic magazine Else, Lausanne, Switzerland.
Her researches and works focus more specifically on how contemporary art interplays with cinema and documentary.

Since 2011, she is a commitee member and founder for the swiss photographic magazine Else, a magazine for the other photography, published by Musée de l’Elysée Lausanne.
In this bi-annual magazine, she curated portfolios by various artists using photography as a medium, but also as archive, found material or document.

RongRong (China) and inri (Japan) have been working together since 2000. Their works reflect the intimate world that they have created together, while pushing the boundaries of traditional black-and-white darkroom techniques. Their past critically acclaimed series of works, such as Mt. Fuji, In Nature, and Liulitun, focus on the beauty of the human body in nature and the urban environment. In 2007, RongRong and inri established the Three Shadows Photography Art Centre in the Caochangdi art district of Beijing, the premier platform for international communication. They also started the annual Three Shadows Photography Award to discover and encourage China’s most promising photographers. RongRong and inri’s recent work brings attention to the beauty and value of new beginnings in their shared life and surroundings, especially amidst a rapidly changing world.

Eric Pillault is creative director based in Paris, France. He worked as a freelance graphic designer and DA in numerous magazines. He started to work with Terry Richardson, Nathaniel Goldberg, Mark Borthwick, for the magazine “”20 ans”” in 1996. In 2003, he set the tone of the monthly magazine “”Jalouse””, which was a creative platform for many photographers, including Jean-Baptiste Mondino, Araki Nobuyoshi, Duane Michals and Homma Takashi.
In 2011, he successfully launched M le Monde magazine with Marie-Pierre Lannelongue. Neither an infotainment nor a woman magazine, M is mixing the best of information and style. The magazine has won many awards since its launch, captivating readers and advertisers by collaborating weekly with leading photographers such as Juergen Teller, Paolo Roversi, Peter Lindbergh, Mario Sorrenti, Alasdair McLellan, and Bruce Weber …
As an multidisciplinary artist, Eric regularly conceives special edition artists books. Eric also runs the Funnybones studio, which is involved in many visual identity projects, design and brand consultancy – in the fields of contemporary art, fashion, luxury and culture.

Afronova is a Pan African platform for modern and contemporary art based in Johannesburg, south Africa, established by Henri Vergon in 2004.
Afronova presents exhibitions of modern and contemporary art from the African continent and represent artists. It has a specialized bookshop with a catalogue of local and international publications on the art of the continent.
Besides the program of exhibitions, Afronova also develops a network of international residencies and collaborations with partners like the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, The Menil Collection in Houston, La Maison Rouge in Paris or WIELS in Brussels. Afronova facilitates the participation of artists in international art fairs and cultural events like the Bamako Biennale of African Photography and Kyotographie in Kyoto or 1:54 African Contemporary Art Fair in London and New York.

Sujong Song is a Seoul-based independent curator who is active in all aspects of photography, from publication to exhibition and events planning. Since 2006, she has been on the steering committee for Korea’s largest photography festival, the Daegu Photo Biennale, and was recently made director of its portfolio review section. Also, she also founded brand new photo festival, Seoul Lunar Photo Fest last year.

Sujong served on the committees for the Angkor Photo Festival and the World Health Organization’s Stop TB Photo Award. She has organized lots of exhibitions including the 2012 Mario Giacomelli exhibition at the Museum of Photography in Seoul, a show commemorating the 1980 Gwangju Massacre at the GoEun Museum of Photography in 2013 and Five Views from Korea at the Noorderlicht Gallery in 2014. Sujong has also worked in broadcast, helping create shows for the national broadcasting system KBS and the English-language Arirang TV.

She was on the judging panels for World Press Photo, POYi, and Lensculture Exposure Awards, among numerous photography awards. Sujong currently writes a column on photography for the daily Kyunghyang Shinmun, was a guest photo editor for the Madrid-based OjodePez, and was formerly the editor-in-chief of GEO-Korea.

Mariko Takeuchi, Japan, is a photography critic, an independent curator and associate professor of Kyoto University of Art and Design. She was also visiting researcher of the National Museum of Art, Osaka, previously of the National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo. Takeuchi was guest curator for the Spotlight on Japan, of Paris Photo 2008 and received a Fulbright Grant for her research on photography education in the US. She was responsible for the Japanese edition of the book and touring exhibition Intended Consequences: Rwandan Children Born of Rape by Jonathan Torgovnik. She has also frequently worked as a portfolio reviewer and lecturer at photography festivals. She has contributed to Ryudai Takano: 1993-1996, Lieko Shiga’s notebook / Rasen Kaigan, Osamu James Nakagawa’s GAMA CAVES, The Oxford Companion to the Photograph and Nihon No Shashinka 101 (101 Japanese photographers), among many other catalogues, books and magazines.

Takayuki Ishii was born in 1963 and moved to the United States in 1982. After studying painting at the Otis College of Art and Design in Los Angeles, Ishii began his career in the U.S as an art dealer. Upon returning to Japan in 1994, Ishii established Taka Ishii Gallery in Otsuka, Tokyo (the gallery is currently located in Kiyosumi). Over the past 20 years Taka Ishii Gallery has held exhibitions with Japan’s leading photographers including Nobuyoshi Araki, Daido Moriyama, Naoya Hatakeyama; painters such as Nobuya Hoki, Naoto Kawahara, Kyoko Murase, and Hiroe Saeki, and has further introduced the works of up and coming Japanese artists: Ei Arakawa, Yuki Kimura, Yukinori Maeda, and Kei Takemura. In addition to organizing exhibitions in Japan, Ishii quickly expanded his activities to the global art scene. Through regular participation in international art fairs such as Art Basel and Frieze Art Fair, Ishii has significantly contributed to increasing the global recognition of the Japanese artists he represents. At the same time, he serves to actively introduce the currents of contemporary art in Europe and the United States to the Japanese audience through exhibitions with highly acclaimed international artists such as Thomas Demand, Dan Graham, Sterling Ruby, and Cerith Wyn Evans as well as the works of aspiring young artists like Luke Fowler and Mario Garcia Torres. Ishii is also involved in the publication of exhibition catalogs and artist’s books.

In February 2011, Ishii established Taka Ishii Gallery Photography / Film in Roppongi, Tokyo, as a gallery that specializes in photography. The gallery showcases the works of Japan’s prewar and postwar generation of photographers including VIVO members such as Eikoh Hosoe, Shomei Tomatsu, and Ikko Narahara; Minoru Hirata whom documented the activities of avant-garde artists of the 1960s, and works by Kiyoji Otsuji from Jikken Kobo (Experimental Workshop). Furthermore, the gallery introduces works by young photographers such as Erika Yoshino, Tomoki Imai, Nao Tsuda, and Ayaka Yamamoto. June 2014 marked the opening of Taka Ishii Gallery Photography Paris in Le Marais, followed by the opening of Taka Ishii Gallery New York in the city’s Upper East Side in March 2015.

In May 2014, Ishii established the Fine-Art Photography Association (FAPA) as a means to further develop the unique and rich context of Japan’s photography community. The Association comprising of supporting galleries, publishers, and booksellers, launched the Hillside Terrace Photo Fair in Daikanyama, Tokyo, in September 2014. In addition to nurturing the growth of Japan’s currently developing photography market, the association continues to plan a variety of measures with the aim to further promote and disseminate practices in Fine-Art photography and film culture.

Born in Oita, Japan. Completed the doctoral course in the Graduate School of Letters, Arts and Sciences of Waseda University. She established AKAAKA Art Publishing, Inc. in 2006 to publish mainly photographic and art books. She has taken part in many recognized publications includeing Shiga Lieko’s “CANARY” (2007), OKADA Atsushi’s “I am” (2007), Masashi Asada’s “Asadake” (2008), Cozue Takagi’s “MID,” “GROUND” (2009) and Arata Dodo’s “Taigan” (2012). All of which won Kimura Ihei Photo Award. Since 2014, she has been a professor at the Department of Photography of Tokyo Polytechnic University.

Takako Ikezaki, born in Osaka in 1969, is the director of Port Gallery T. After graduated from Konan Women’s University in 1992, she worked for a marketing company for four years. Since 1996, she studied art and photography at International Centre of Photography Osaka (presently Takarazuka Media Library). In 1999, she had her first exhibition “Shiori” at the Third Gallery Aya in Osaka. After, she worked in the editorial, promotion, and planning section of a NPO Saito Media Library from 2005 to 2007. In 2007, she founded Port Gallery T in Osaka to support and discover young talents through exhibitions. In spring 2013, she started a photo critic journal “Eizo Shiron 100”. In 2015, she plans to establish a new section of the gallery which covers the functions of retail, wholesale, and mediation in the picture dealing.

From 2009 to 2010, she has been dispatched to Australia and New Caledonia via Japanese government Overseas Study Programme for Artists.

In continuation from a career in advertising and design, Seiji Komatsu established the design office EMON Inc. in 1996, with a focus on advertising and spatial design, and EMON Photo Gallery in 2005, specializing in contemporary photography. Komatsu utilizes these channels to operate outside of notions of genre in his pursuit of the potential inherent in vision and the visual.
EMON Photo Gallery has an extensive exhibition schedule and participates regularly in art fairs around the world, while also hosting a yearly photography competition for emerging artists. EMON Photo Gallery continues to introduce Japan’s premier photographic artists to the world, from the emerging talent to the masterful veteran, seeking out and nurturing photographers who possess an insatiable spirit of inquiry with regard to their medium.

Lucille Reyboz :
Photographer. Born in 1973, Lucille Reyboz spent an important part of her childhood in Africa where she began her journey with photography. In 1999, she discovered Japan while participating in Sakamoto Ryuichi’s opera Life. First and foremost a portrait photographer, Reyboz produced numerous record covers for such labels as Blue Note and Verve. She has extensively exhibited her work all over the world, notably in Visa pour l’image (2001), Phillips de Pury in New York (2007), HSBC on the Champs-Elysées during Paris Photo (2008), CHANEL NEXUS HALL, Tokyo (2011). She has also published several books including, Batammaba Bâtisseurs d’univers, by Gallimard, Source, Belles de Bamako and Impressions du Japon by Editions de la Martinière created in collaboration with Keiichiro Hirano. Reyboz continues to be fascinated and inspired by Japan and Shinto rituals, she now lives and works in Kyoto where she created KYOTOGRAPHIE International Photography Festival with Yusuke Nakanishi in 2013.

Yusuke Nakanishi:
Born in 1968, Yusuke Nakanishi is a lighting artist who travels the world, and expresses his impressions of light and shadow from his memories. He has worked as a lighting director for feature films, stages, music concerts, fashion shows and Interior designs. He also created the Eatable Lights object series, and has exhibited installations at the Hara Museum, the School Gallery Paris, and Nuits Blanche Kyoto. He has founded KYOTOGRAPHIE International Photography Festival with Lucille Reyboz from 2013.
